Birkenhead Park shortlisted as a potential World Heritage Site

This is HUGE news  – Rob Belcher from Wirral Council writes:-

“I thought you might be interested in some very exciting news for Birkenhead Park (and hopefully for public parks more widely).

You will know that last summer we submitted an application for Birkenhead Park to be included in the UK’s Tentative List of potential future World Heritage Sites. Today, the Government’s Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has announced that we have been successful in our application – https://www.gov.uk/government/news/seven-sites-confirmed-in-the-running-for-unesco-world-heritage-status . Feel free to share this news widely with colleagues.

This is an important first step towards gaining World Heritage recognition for Birkenhead Park, and is a prerequisite to being nominated for consideration by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. There will certainly be much work to be done in preparing for a successful future nomination but for the time being we are extremely happy to celebrate achieving this significant milestone.”

Well done all at Wirral Council and all those involved in the work so far.
